Horstman Leaves Field Behind for Tri-City Win

6/24/16 - Tri-City Motor Speedway - Auburn, MI

With 23 sprints in the pits, #17 Jared Horstman of Cloverdale, OH, went on the track and put down the 3rd fastest qualifying time. Horstman’s night only got better as he won his heat race, making the Dash, and then winning the Dash from the front row. Winning the Dash put Horstman on the pole and with his car dialed in, he never looked back.
Fast qualifier for the night was #2 Kyle Sauder, with #85 Dustin Daggett only 3 thousandths of a second slower. Rounding out the top five qualifiers was Horstman, #28 Phil Gressman and #16 Ryan Ruhl.
The action started early in Heat 1, when a couple laps in Gressman came up out of turn two and made contact with #57 Mike Dunlap. Dunlaps car, already on the top of the track on the backstretch, reared up on it’s rear wheels! Fighting to keep the car under control, Dunlap was able to keep moving and no caution came out! Finishing out front was #11R Chase Ridenour, followed by Gressman and Sauder.
Heat 2 rolled out with #48 Mike Burkin on the pole with #49t Gregg Dalman next to him. Starting 4th, Daggett moved up front to take the lead. Behind him, Dalman ran into a little trouble coming out of turn 1. Everyone held their breath as the 49t car came to a stop at a 45 degree angle at the top of turn 2 …and then rocked the opposite direction and landed on its’s wheels. Going to the back of the heat, Dalman raced his way from 8th to 4th to make the transfer to the A - Main.
Heat 3 was led out by #4 Craig Karazim and #4L Brady Locke. Charging up from the 4th position, Horstman soon was leading the heat, with #16B Max Stambaugh on his hip. Starting in the 6th position, #3 Kyle Locke efficiently moved through the field to take a transfer spot in 4th. While rookie #37 Noah Dunlap was able to hold his position and get the last transfer spot.
The the top 3 finishers in the Heat races; Ridenour, Gressman, Sauder, Daggett, Burkin, Ruhl, Horstman, Stambaugh and Karazim, were brought out on the front stretch in front of the “standing room only” crowd and 9 children drew for each of the drivers. Last in line, #4 Craig Karazim waited somewhat patiently as each number was drawn for their starting position in the DASH. Good things happen for those that wait…at least that was the case for Karazim Friday night as a #1 was drawn for him to start the pole of the DASH.
With 9 of tonight’s fastest cars on the track, there wasn’t a lot of passing in the Dash. However, from the back in the 9th position, Stambaugh moved up 4 spots to 5th and Ridenour moved to 3rd and Horstman moved up to the pole position for the feature.
In the B-Main, the top 5 finishers would move on to the Feature. #19 Brett Mann starting in 5th didn’t want to leave anything to chance and miss the cut and worked his way up to a 1st place finish and #57 Mike Dunlap starting 4th, followed Mann up to the front taking 2nd place. #84 Kyle Poortenga, #4L Brady Locke and #46 Robert Huisken finished out the field for the A-Main Feature.
Rolling out on the track for the Feature were 20 cars chomping at the bit for their chance to win the first ever GLSS at Tri-City Speedway. As the green flag dropped and the cars came roaring out of turn 4, everyone was holding their breaths as the cars thundered into turn 1 and 2. Clearing the turn and putting in the first completed lap everyone settled in for the 25 lap feature.
About 3 and half minutes into the race on lap 16, suddenly the caution was thrown as Karazim’s car spun to a stop backwards in front of the grand stands as his right rear wheel bounced into the infield after hitting one of the cars and coming to a rest below turn 2. Sauder, Daggett, Ridenour and Stambaugh were relieved with the caution, hoping that would give them the opportunity to reel in Horstman who had been working his way through lap traffic. But on this night, running a new car and engine, #17 Jared Horstman wouldn’t be caught. Another great night of racing in front of a packed house was ended in victory lane with a large Horstman sponsor and fan base present for the festivities.
