GLSS-Great Lakes Super Sprints

GAS CITY/PLYMOUTH DOUBLE HEADER

GAS CITY, IN – June just got a lot more exciting in northern Indiana! Great Lakes Super Sprints will be traveling to Gas City I-69 Speedway for their first ever visit on Friday, June 8th. Then traveling approximately 80 miles NW, GLSS will make their first visit of the season to Plymouth Speedway on Saturday, June 9th.

New promoter of Gas City I-69 Speedway, Jerry Gappens, is excited about the opportunity to bring back a weekly Friday night racing program to the fans and racers in north-central Indiana. Recently Gappens reached an agreement with track owner Jack Himelick, to lease and promote Gas City I-69 Speedway and working together they hope to make Gas City one of the premier short tracks in the Midwest.

Himelick has owned the facility since 1996 and has made significant upgrades since then. “This is a great opportunity,” said Gappens. “I appreciate Jack’s faith in me and allowing me to come on board and usher in a new era of racing and entertainment for this little gem of a facility. I think the fans, competitors and community are going to like what we have in store for them.”

Gappens is a native of nearby Kokomo, IN and brings more than 25 years of successful motorsports promotion to Gas City I-69 Speedway, including running the largest sports and entertainment facility in New England. One of his first priorities is putting together a schedule of events for this season. With Gappens planning on featuring non-wing sprint cars, Great Lakes Super Sprints is pleased to bring the first winged sprint car show to Gas City I-96 Speedway in quite a few years!!!

The speedway is a semi-banked, quarter mile dirt oval track located just off Interstate I-69 between Indianapolis and Fort Wayne.

On Saturday evening, June 9th, the winged sprints of Great Lakes Super Sprints will be traveling NW to Plymouth Speedway which is a 3/8ths mile banked dirt oval track owned by Ed Kennedy. Kennedy purchased Plymouth Speedway around 2011, which had been an asphalt track for nearly 60 years!

Kennedy has made numerous improvements, including all new seating, but none as noticeable or important as the conversion of the track to a clay-based dirt track! Dirt racing has added a different excitement in an area with several asphalt tracks. Plymouth Speedway is quickly becoming “The playground of Power”!

Great Lakes Super Sprints will be visiting Gas City I-96 Speedway one time this season but will be making a second appearance at Plymouth on August 4th.

Great Lakes Super Sprints is a traveling winged sprint car series that has an engine limit of 360 cubic inches. The majority of the GLSS members are from Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Canada and we race primarily in the Great Lakes Region.
