GLSS-Great Lakes Super Sprints

On A Rail, Horstman Glides to Checkerd

Lake Odessa, MI - Two time Great Lakes Super Sprints presented by Engine Pro & ARP Champion Jared Horstman (Cloverdale, OH) takes a page from his old notes at I-96 Speedway to cruise to victory on a fast and racey track.

28 Winged Sprints turned out today for the Open Wheel Shootout presented by ran by Great Lakes Sprints. For the first time this year, all 5 GLSS Champions are registered to an already stout field of cars. Current Champion Ryan Ruhl (Coldwater, MI), 2 time Champion Horstman, past Champions Phil Gressman (Fremont, OH), Dustin Daggett (Portland, MI) and Chase Ridenour (Perry, MI).

Qualifying 3 cars at a time, Max Stambaugh (Elida, OH) stood at the top of the field as the Ti22 Performance Fast Qualifier with an average lap in 14.1 seconds or 114.89 mph. Gressman, Tylar Rankin (Coldwater, MI), Brad Lamberson (Parma, OH) and Jason Blonde (Litchfield, MI) rounded out the top 5 qualifiers.

In the Engler Machine & Tool Heat 1, Horstman led green to checked. Lamberson grabbed the 2nd redraw spot while rookie Bobby Elliot (Allenton, MI) rounded out the podium.

Devon Dobie (Wapakoneta, OH) was on the peddle and in cruise control in the Jim Coffey & Sons Plumbing and Heating Heat 2. Closing the gap fast at the checkered was Gressman, who started 4th and followed Dobie at the line by 15 hundreths of a second for an exciting finish. Local driver Kyle Poortenga (Woodland, MI) rounded out the podium.

Champions Daggett and Ruhl started side by side in the Beacon and Bridge Markets Heat 3. Daggett entered turn one side by side, but Daggett was able to seperate and hang his right wheel against the cushion. Daggett took the checked with Ruhl and Rankin rounding out the podium.

In the Midland Steel Last Chance race, 13 cars rolled out to battle 12 laps for the last 5 available feature spots. Taking the green flag the whole field is able to navigate the first lap and as everyone settles into a groove, suddenly Levi Poortenga (Woodland, MI) had something break sending him in air on the front stretch putting him eye to eye with the flag man, sending a part into the grandstands and gathering up Mike Astrauskas (Pierson, MI) and Tony Bures (Bristol, IN) sending them in the air and ending their nights. With Poortenga upside down and Astrauskas and Bures quickly checked out and ok, everyones attention quickly turned to the grandstands where 2 local fans were hit with something that made it through the fence.

As the debris and cars were being cleared, the two spectators were carried/excorted to the waiting ambulance on the front stretch. They were then transported to the local ER where they were attended to. At the time of this writing, both fans were cleared to go home. A scary moment for everyone as our prayers go out for everyone involved tonight.

Re-firing the cars roughly 45 minutes later, the remaining 8 laps were ran. First time visitor Luke Griffin (Sandusky, OH) takes the checked and advances to the A-Main. Also transferring were Frank Neill (Vickory, OH), Andy Teunessen (Hastings, MI), Blonde* and Eli Lakin (Buchanan, MI). *With a hurt motor, Blonde needed to scratch from the feature, allowing the first alternate, Keith Sheffer, Jr (Jerome, MI) to take the last transfer spot.

Rolling by the healthy sprint car crowd at 11 pm with our 4 wide salute to the fans, the green flag dropped a minute later and Ruhl jumped out to the early lead with Daggett in tow. In lap 5, the first caution comes out as Daggett comes to a stop at the entrance to turn 3 with a damaged rim and flat tire from some traffic contact. With help in the hot pits by a number of teams, Daggett is pushed out in 45 seconds and the green flag is quickly flying.

In lap 8, Hortsman gets by Ruhl and seems to have his car on cruise control. Horstman is flying thru the corners, but isn't able to shake Lamberson or Gressman. Lamberson never ran worse then 3rd, and Gressman who was running 6th, slowly reeled in cars and clawed his way up to 3rd in the 11th lap. Behind these cars, Stambaugh and Danny Sams (North Port, FL) were chasing people down as well.

With 3 laps to go a late caution flies and the field is tightened up behind Horstman. Giving Horstman clean air and a clear track to the finish line, Lamberson and Gressman were not able to reel Horstman in. However as the checkered flag flew, Horstmans lead had been cut to 1.3 seconds by Lamberson. The top 6 cars all crossed within 5 seconds of each other. Daggett worked his way up from 19th to finish 8th.

Sams earned the Hoosier Racing Tire Hard Charger award which was well deserved with the night the Home Pro Roofing Team had put in, changing a broken rearend before their heat race and starting 13th in the feature and driving to a 4th place finish. Out with a potential broken frame, Gregg Dalman (Bellevue, MI) was tonights Engine Pro Luckey Dog.

The next scheduled Great Lakes Super Sprints presented by Engine Pro & ARP show, will be Saturday, July 30th as we take the track at Fremont Speedway in Fremont, OH.
